The Smith Family
Cemetery is a peaceful setting on the banks of the Mississippi
River that serves
as a final resting place for many early Smith family members. As many
families did in the time, Joseph and Emma set aside this part of their
land to bury family members and friends. During their time in Nauvoo, the
Smith family suffered many losses. Joseph's parents, Lucy Mack and Joseph
Sr., and many other close family members were laid to rest here. In 1928
the bodies of the Prophet Joseph Smith Jr., his wife Emma, and his brother
Hyrum were reinterred to their present location in the family cemetery.
Thousands each year
visit the Smith Family Cemetery to remember the lives of those buried
here. The Smith Family Cemetery is open 24 hours per day for any who wish
to personally pay their respects.
