Far West/Haun’s Mill, Caldwell County, Missouri:  In 1836 Saints began gathering and building a city on the open prairie of northern Missouri.  Within two years, Far West became a community of 5,000 residents, more than one-hundred and fifty houses, four dry goods stores, three family groceries, six blacksmith shops, and two hotels.  A conflict of cultures resulted in confrontation at Haun’s Mill and Far West.  The Church was forced to move from the state of Missouri during the winter of 1838-39.

Driving direction to Haun's Mill:

Approach from northbound on I-35 (coming from Independence, heading north)
Take exit #40 to Polo (State Rte 116)
Rte. 116, I?35 to Hwy 13 (Polo) 12.3 miles
Turn north on Hwy 13, Polo to County Rd. (CR) F 4.0 miles
Turn east on CR F to Catawba Rd. 12.6 miles
Turn north on Catawba Rd. to the Shoal Creek Bridge 2.2 miles
From Bridge turn west on the dirt road (left)
Cross over the culvert south to Haun's Mill Site 0 .8 miles


Approaching from southbound I?35 (coming from Des Moines, heading south)
Take I-35 south to Cameron, Missouri Highway 36 (Exit 54)
Go east on MO 36 to Hamilton, MO about 12 miles
Turn south on Highway 13 to CR U about 5 miles
Turn east onto CR U to Ironwood Dr. 8.5 miles
From CR U/Ironwood Drive continue east to Catawba Rd. 1.5 miles
Turn south on Catawba Rd. to the Haun's Mill dirt road 2.0 miles
From Catawba Rd. turn right (west) on the dirt road
Cross over the culvert south to the Haun's Mill Site 0.8 miles

Driving directions to Far West:

From I-35- exit 40 (Lathrop-Polo). Drive east on Highway 116 six miles. Turn north on Highway D. Stay on D. Drive through Mirabile, cross Highway HH and continue north until reaching the Far West Temple Site and Community of Christ white frame church. (Far West is about a total of 9 miles from the 116 and Highway D intersection).
